Much to my delight, the most stunning hairstyles on last night’s 66th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards red carpet were of the twisted and braided variety. Claire Danes — my pick for best everything of the evening — put an elegant spin on a fishtail braid with a pinned-up chignon version, and January Jones sported a modern and edgy take on a tightly twisted updo. While some haters dissed Jones’ textured bangs — claiming they looked a mess — I think they added a youthful-looking finish that most award show updos lack. Here’s how I’d recreate these looks without a pro stylist or hours spent doing them:
Claire Danes’ Fishtail Chignon
Step 1: Part your hair on the side and sweep it into a low ponytail.
Step 2: Twist your ponytail into a bun and secure with bobby pins.
Step 3: Fishtail braid (here’s a quickie video how-to) a ponytail hair piece (try: Scunchi Curly Style Faux Hair Ponytail 20-Inch, $15.49) and pull apart the braid a bit to loosen it up. Secure the ends with a tiny clear elastic.
Step 4: Wrap the braided piece over your bun and secure into place.
January Jones’ Tucked Twists
Step 1: Separate out your bang area and sweep the rest of your hair straight back. If you don’t have bangs, create a middle or side part.
Step 2: Spritz all of your hair with a texturizing spray (try Redken Quick Tease 15 Backcombing Finishing Spray, $15.95) to add some grip to it.
Step 3: Starting at your temple on one side of your head, begin tightly twisting your hair toward the back of your head. Keep the twist as close to your hairline as possible. Secure the twist at the base of your hairline with bobby pins and add a few more pins along the actual twist to anchor it into place.
Step 4: Repeat the twisting action on the other side of your head and secure the two twists into a very tight chignon at the base of your head.
If these weren’t your favorite looks of the Emmys, which ones were? Please share!
