I Have Hair Oil Fever. Here’s Why You Should Too:

Scroll down to content

With hair properly baked in the sun and fried in the pool, it’s the perfect time to reach for the biggest trend in hair care: hair oils. These oils have saturated the market because, well, they’re awesome. They control hair, add shine and nourish damaged strands. Perfect post-summer product, no? When you hit the stores, you’ll find there are basically two camps when it comes to these oils: pure oils and silicone-based oils. The pure oils are usually pricier because the oils, like argan oil from Morocco (the most popular in it’s class), are expensive to extract. They are also incredibly effective. If you are in the market for an all-natural styler, are anti-silicone, or have finer hair, this is your camp. “Oils won’t sit on the cuticle layer and weigh the hair down as they penetrate into your hair,” says Wendy Belanger, Pureology Global Artistic Director. However, silicone doesn’t necessarily deserve a bad rap. A serum that uses a combo of oils and water-based silicone to tame hair and make it look healthy can give extra smoothing power and is usually less expensive to produce because the oil isn’t the main ingredient. Once you pick your potion, you can either apply these to wet hair before blowdrying or to the mid-length and ends of already dry hair — but start slowly and using a very light hand. Since this is oil, there might be a little trial and error to find the right amount so your hair doesn’t look greasy. Here are a few we recommend:

John Masters Organics Argan Oil, $38 This pure oil not only fights frizz (I use this on my wet hair after I shower at the gym), but you can use it on your skin too — it hydrates and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Pureology Precious Oil, $40 pureology Made from a combination of 100% pure sunflower, coconut, olive and jojoba oils, this super-hair tamer can be used as a styling product, or a pre-shampoo treatment for fine hair.

Garnier Sleek & Shine Moroccan Sleek Hair Oil Treatment, $5 This argan-infused treatment makes hair shiny all day.

Lee Stafford Argan Oil From Morocco Nourishing Miracle Oil, $15 With a serum-like consistency, this oil is lightweight and gives hair super-shine.

Is there a new trend that you want to try?
