So, you stayed out in the sun too long and got nasty burn. It happens to the best of us. Especially in the most common areas to fry: Around your hairline and in your part, the tops of your feet, under your bathing suit straps and underarms (if you’ve ever fallen asleep with your arms draped over your head, you know what I’m talking about). So, aside from focusing on those hot spots when you sunscreen, what can you do after the burn? Dermatologist Naila Malik, MD, from Westlake, Texas, shares her post-sun fast-healing tips about what you can do to soothe painful sunburn.

Cool Your Skin: Shower with cool water or apply a cool compress to the hurt-y skin. Also, skin products with a cooling effect like aloe and menthol may help speed healing. Try Solarcaine Cool Aloe Burn Relief Pain Relieving Gel, $8, or Dr. Malik’s own brand, Naila MD Calm Cleansing Gelee, $36 for some relief.

Moisturize: Slather on lotion to hydrate skin from the outside, but be sure to avoid products with alcohol, artificial fragrances, colors or parabens. You can also use Vitamin E oil directly from the vitamin capsule to prevent scaring.

Up your Vitamin C: Eat foods high in natural vitamin C like fresh citrus. They can reduce the severity of sunburn and improve healing, says Dr. Malik.

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to help speed up healing too.
