Reader Question: “My pores are huge. Is there anything I can do to shrink them?” — Lauren
Answer: I reached out to New York City-based dermatologist Arielle Kauvar to answer this super common question. And, she said that basically there are two things that cause larger, more visible pores — aging and oil.
If you have oily skin, your pores are likely larger because the pores are actually the opening of the hair follicle and oil gland complex, says Kauvar. In order to help make them appear smaller, you need to exfoliate regularly. Try a scrub you can use daily like the Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream Rinse-Off Formula, $18.50 to do the job. Then, follow the scrub with a toner like the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner, $16. The two products together will remove trapped oil from your pores to allow them to shrink up a bit.
If you think aging is to blame for your large pore issue, a laser treatment is your best bet. Because thinning collagen is the reason why your pores are stretching, you need to stimulate new collagen growth, says Kauvar. She recommends the use of a fractional laser like Fraxel, which does just that.
