Have you been slathering on body lotions, creams, oils (you name it) this winter at an attempt to hydrate your dry skin, but without much success or relief? You’re so not alone. What’s a scaly skinned girl to do then, you ask? One word: Exfoliate. I know you’ve heard this over and over again, but because I myself am guilty of remebering to exfoliate my face regularly while forgetting the rest of my body, I think it bears repeating. You should aim to exfoliate your body skin two to three times a week before moisturizing so that the lotion, cream or oil you apply isn’t simply hydrating the dead skin that’s sitting on the surface. By sloughing off that top layer of dead skin, you’re allowing your moisturizer to penetrate into the layers of skin that can actually take advantage of the moisture, which means that your skin will feel hydrated and look that way, too.
If you don’t want to mess with a tub of scrub, an esthetician recently recommended trying the Dermalogica The Ultimate Buffing Cloth, $13. It’s an exfoliating cloth that you can quickly use to ditch dry, flaky skin while in the shower. And, it’s long enough so that you can scrub your own back without having to be double jointed. Once you’re out of the shower and freshly exfoliated then you can pile on the lotion, cream, oil or a combination of the three.
