At the Erin Fetherston show, hairstylist Esther Langham created not one, but four different updos (see ponytail number one pictured above). They all had a fabulous and cool ’60s vibe that oozed flirty, fun and sexy. I plan to recreate each and every one of them and will share how-tos (once New York Fashion Week winds down), but what I know after chatting with Langham is, the key to making an updo less challenging to create is to prep your hair properly.
“Prepping hair with products beforehand is like laying the foundation before you build a house,” she says. And, her preferred method of prepping hair before styling these fresh, soft updos was to first apply Alterna Bamboo Volume Uplifting Root Blast, $24 on just the roots and Alterna Bamboo Volume Weightless Whipped Mousse, $22 on the mid-shafts of the hair to the ends before blow drying. This combo added the necessary volume and texture needed to create the ponytails, braided buns and French twists each of the models strutted down the catwalk wearing with little fuss.
Though the week isn’t over just yet, I’m going to say that these updos seen at Erin Fetherson were some of my favorites of the week — along with the twists that fabulous hairstylist Ted Gibson created for the Lela Rose show. More on those later this week …
LOVE retro updos, thanks for the backstage tips! Can’t wait to see the how-to recreations you plan on posting.
