How to Copy Rose Byrne’s Sexy Side Ponytail

Scroll down to content

Clearly I have a girl crush on Rose Byrne, or on her hair anyway, because I seriously want to copy almost every hairstyle she’s worn lately. I recently posted about how to get a cut similar to hers — which I absolutely plan to do soon — and now I have to share how I plan to recreate the retro, sexy side ponytail she wore on Letterman this week. It’s a perfect look for a night out and not too tricky to do. Here’s the breakdown:

Step 1: Spritz roots with volumizing spray (try John Frieda Luxurious Volume All-Out Hold Hairspray, $9.99) and blow dry your hair straight with a round brush to add a bit of volume. Don’t hold the ends around the brush as you go though — you want them to remain straight.

Step 2: Once your hair is fully dry, use a flat iron to smooth over the ends of your hair if they have too much bend, but only hit the mid-shafts to the ends.

Step 3: Backcomb the hair at your crown a bit, and create a deep side part that extends back a couple of inches.

Step 4: Spritz a very small amount of spray wax (try Redken Wax Blast 10 High Impact Finishing Spray Wax, $17.95) on your strands from mid-shafts to ends and gently tousle your hair with your hands to add a slightly messy texture.

Step 5: Sweep all of your hair into a low side ponytail opposite your part and secure with a clear elastic. If you want to get fancy, you can take a tiny section of your ponytail hair and wrap it around the elastic. Secure the end of the section under your pony with a bobby pin.

Note: This ponytail hairstyle will look most similar to Byrne’s if you have long, side-sweeping bangs or face-framing layers. Let them sweep across your forehead and spritz with hairspray to help lock them in place.

Do you have a celebrity hairstyle you’re crushing on? Tell me about and I’ll explain how to recreate it.
