5 Tips to Camouflaging Large Pores — If You Can’t Shrink Them

Reader Question: “I would like to know how to cover up pores (if you can’t seem to get rid of them) without further clogging them. Do you have any makeup suggestions?” — Sara

The Answer: After reader Sara asked the above question as a follow up to this post about how to minimize the appearance of large pores, I gave New York City-based makeup artist Fabiola Arancibia a jingle. Here’s the scoop she gave me on how to make skin look poreless — when it’s far from it.

Tip 1: Use primer: “My go-tos for minimizing pores when doing makeup are Nars Pro-Prime Pore Refining Primer Oil-Free, $32 and Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15, $52,” says Arancibia. “Before applying these primers I make sure to apply the right amount of moisturizer — don’t over do it — [and] use an oil-free moisturizer. The more matte in the T-zone the less you will draw attention to obvious pores,” she says.

Tip 2: Apply primer sparingly — only where it’s needed — and don’t forget to wash off all of your makeup at night to avoid clogged pores, says Arancibia. “If you have oily skin, make sure to use a gel cleanser. For dry skin, use a foaming milk,” she says.

Tip 3: Avoid heavy foundation. “This is where the primer comes in. You need less foundation to do the job and create a flawless finish. I also use a mattifying/oil-free foundation (Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation, $34) and foundation powders [try Laura Mercier Foundation Powder, $40] because shine draws attention to obvious pores,” says Arancibia.

Tip 4: “Stay out of the sun. The sun magnifies this problem,” she says.

Tip 5: Get rid of excess shine throughout the day, which can also make pores more obvious by “using blotting papers,” says Arancibia.
