How to Do Your Hair and Makeup in 10 Minutes (or Less) While On the Go

So my husband and I took a road trip to Napa last weekend to indulge in a little wine tasting (as you recall from this post about Wine Wipes we’re kinda into sipping the red and white stuff) to celebrate our anniversary.

Well, we had a little hotel snafu, so we had switch hotels after night one and check in to a second hotel for nights two and three. This wouldn’t normally have been a huge deal except for the fact that we hit the mud baths in Calistoga (more on those in a future post) and had to check out immediately afterward — due to the timing — but couldn’t check in to the new hotel until hours later. The problem was that we obviously needed to primp for our day of wine tasting without use of a hotel room.

This was, of course, fine with my husband, but I was not about to spend a day in beautiful wine country sans makeup and with my hair looking a mess (yes, I’m vain). So … I had to get creative. We booked it to hotel we were checking in to later in the day, and I popped into the bathroom near the pool with my toiletry bag in hand. I had to attempt to pull myself together — quickly — while my husband waited (patiently) outside for me.

Here’s what I did:

Makeup: First, I slathered on First Aid Beauty 5 in 1 Face Cream/SPF 30, $38 to hydrate and protect my skin. I then dusted on bareMinerals Original SPF 15 Foundation, $26 and swept MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural, $27 on my forehead, cheeks, nose and chin to add a bronzy glow. Next, I dusted my cheeks with a peach-colored blush. Swiped my lashes with L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara, $8.95, and finished my look by slicking on my Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color SPF 12 in Sweet Nectar, $23.

Hair: My hair was semi wet and had no product in it, so my only option was to braid it or sweep it into a bun. I decided to go with my signature double French braided updo. Thank goodness I always have a few straggler bobby pins around. I created my Dorothy style braids (I parted my hair using a bobby pin), and then I crisscrossed the braids in the back, tucked in the ends, and pinned them as best as I could without being able to see the back of my head.

In total, I got ready in less than 10 minutes (I’m quite skilled at this braided hairstyle after doing it weekly for years), and the photo above was the outcome. I should have taken a shot without my sunglasses on, but I swear, I looked presentable under them.

This “challenge” really proved to me that it is possible to get ready in minutes — even without hot styling tools or a whole slew of products.
