“The skin on my face is looking a little bit dull — how do I brighten it up?”

I’m positive reader SammyRae isn’t alone in asking, “Recently I feel like the skin on my face is looking a little bit dull … how do I brighten it up?” Am I right? I’ll take that as a yes. To answer this question I first have to ask you to answer a few …

Do you exfoliate regularly?

If you use a physical scrub (grainy one) or use a chemical exfoliant (glycolic acid, salicylic acid, retinoids, etc.) daily or a few times a week, that’s great. If you’re not already doing this, this should be step one on your path to glowing skin. Exfoliants to try:

Dermalogica Micofoliant, $50 — you can use this very gentle scrub daily to keep dead cells from clogging pores and dulling your complexion.

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate,$85 — use this a couple of times a week to ditch dead skin. It contains a combination of physical and chemical exfoliants.

Are you using a moisturizer that’s suited to your skin type?

If you do the first step and you still aren’t getting your glow on, you may need to find a moisturizer that offers up the amount of hydration your skin is clearly craving. A fabulous ingredient to look for in a moisturizer? Hyaluronic acid. It’s one of the most hydrating ingredients on the market. A moisturizing cream to try:

Neutrogena Ageless Intensives Deep Wrinkle Moisturizing Night Cream, $19.99 — this not only contains hyaluronic acid, but it also contains retinol (a retinoid), which will help exfoliate your skin to keep wrinkles and dullness at bay.

And finally, do you use a skin care brush or cloth when cleansing?

If you already use an exfoliating product and have a moisturizer that’s seriously hydrating, and your skin still looks dull, try adding a skin care brush or muslin cloth to your routine. Using one while cleansing might be the small boost you need to brighten up your skin. Try:

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, $24.50 — this is a cream cleanser that comes with cotton muslin cloths that not only help you remove every trace of makeup, but also gently remove dead surface skin cells. Oh, and it’s kinda my obsession, so get used to hearing about it.

Olay ProX Skin Cleansing Brush, $29.99

If you regularly follow all three of the steps just mentioned and your inner glow is still hiding, it might be time to fake it. Do that by blending an illuminating cream on your cheekbones, browbones and even down the bridge of your nose to really highlight your features. Try:

Topshop Cheeks in Prism, $20 — it’s new!
