NYFW Hairstyle How-To: Glamorous Fishtail Braids From the Christian Siriano Show

In seasons past, fishtail braids were a go-to way to add a boho vibe to your style. But, at the Christian Siriano show at New York Fashion Week, the fishtail braids were done in a more glamorous way. “The braids at the back evoke refinement and glamour, reminiscent of a Russian girl dressed for an evening at the opera,” says Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders who styled the look. I’m a huge fan of braids, so I’ll definitely follow these steps courtesy of Beenders to copy the look. Will you?

Step 1: Apply styling spray to damp hair and blow-dry your hair straight. Try Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep, $24.

Step 2: Create a center part.

Step 3: Create two fishtails braids — one on each side of your head. Secure the ends of the braids with tiny clear elastics. Not sure how to fishtail braid? Watch our step-by-step fishtail braid tutorial.

Step 4: Tame any flyaway hairs with hairspray. Try Aveda Air Control Hair Spray, $24.

Step 5: Gently massage the braids to add fullness to them.

Step 6: Fold the braids over one another across the back of your head — just above the nape of your neck. Tuck the ends of your braids under and secure with bobby pins.

Step 7: Set the look with a bit more hairspray.

NYFW: Obsessed With the Hairstyle Seen at the Jason Wu Show

Jason Wu Hairstyle New York Fashion Week

As many of you may know, New York Fashion Week is in full swing. And while I normally make it out to the big city to join in on the festivities, this season, I’m opting out. Having a 7-month-old at home doesn’t make travel easy, and because the good ol’ NYC is supposed to get 30 inches of snow, I think  I’m better off here in sunny California. But, that doesn’t mean I’m not scoping out all of the fabulous hairstyles and makeup looks the uber talented artists backstage are creating. And, while I comment on looks from afar, Carrie Stern Kleiner, your other Beauty Editor On Call, will be in the trenches backstage. She’ll be sure to keep you guys in the loop on the tips and tricks the amazing artists are utilizing.

my wedding

The first look I have to comment on (and share a quick how-to for) is the elegant hairstyle seen at the Jason Wu show. It’s beautiful, for sure, but it also reminds me of my wedding gown. Sigh. I wore a draped bodice Vera Wang gown made of english netting (pictured above). It was stunning. The crisscrossed fabric on the bodice looked exactly like this hairstyle created by Odile Gilbert. The style would be perfect for an occasion like a wedding. Here’s how to recreate it:

Step 1: Create a center part on damp hair then divide hair into three sections — two in front of your ears and one at the back of your head.

Step 2: Divide the back section horizontally.

Step 3: Apply a smoothing cream (try Kerastase Ciment Thermique, $39) to the lower back section and create a tight braid. Wrap the braid around the back of your head (in a flat, coil shape) and secure it with bobby pins. This will act as an anchor for your style.

Step 4: Drap the upper back section over the braid and roll your hair into a knot. Secure it over the braid to hide it.

Step 5: Apply smoothing cream to the front left section and spritz it with hairspray. Pull it over toward the right side of your head and wrap it under the knot in the center. Pin it to the braid to secure it in place.

Step 6: Repeat with the right section.

Step 7: Top the style with a bit of shine serum or spray for a super shiny finish (try Kerastase Elixir Ultime Moringa Immortel, $54) and set with hairspray.

If you’re curious to know what makeup look was paired with this gorgeous hairstyle … stay tuned for our next post.

How to Get the Look: The Cosmic Manicure Seen at Veda

If I were to predict a beauty trend that’ll come out of the Spring/Summer 2013 New York Fashion Week shows today (which is a bit early), it would be out-of-this-world-looking nail art. Earlier this week Carrie posted about the “Galaxy Glam” manicure seen at the Nicole Miller show and today I’m here to rave about the “Bespoke Cosmic Nail” seen at Veda. Katie Hughes, Global Colour Ambassador of Butter London, created this graphic, holographic manicure to complement the tie-dye pieces in the collection. Here’s how to copy it:

Step 1: Apply a base coat and two coats of olive nail polish on all but one of your fingernails. Try Butter London 3-Free Lacquer in Sloane Ranger, $14.

Step 2: Paint your remaining nail (the accent nail) with two coats of mauve nail polish. Try Butter London 3-Free Lacquer in Toff, $14.

Step 4: Top all of your nails with a glittery top coat that has very fine flecks of glitter. Try Butter London 3-Free Lacquer in Knackered, $14.

Step 5: Using black nail polish, paint a stripe down the middle of your nail starting a quarter of the way up your nail. Let your polish dry for a few minutes and finish with a top coat.

What do think? Will you try it?

How to Get Matte Red Lips That Really Last

When backstage at the Monique Lhuillier show during New York Fashion Week, I learned a pretty snazzy trick that’ll help make all of your bold lipsticks — red included — last longer and look perfectly matte. The secret is blush, yes, blush.

Makeup artist Val Garland created a gorgeous look (a la an “early ’90s Helmut Lang girl”) that was defined by a fabulous red lip. And, in order to get the perfect shade of red you see above, she mixed three products. First she applied a blue-based red lip liner (she used MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry, $14) then she topped the liner with a yellow-based red lipstick (she used MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger, $14.50). The combo together adds depth to your pout to make it look fuller. And finally, the most important and interesting part — she set the lipstick with blush. Yes, the powdery stuff you normally dust on your cheeks. She dabbed a reddish orange blush over the lipstick to make it appear super matte and to set the color for long-lasting wear. She used MAC Pro Satin Blush in Devil, $15.50 (available at Pro stores only).

I’ve set mine with loose powder before, but haven’t ever tried blush. Have you? I’m definitely attempting it the next time I go for red.
