My 4 Favorite Lipglosses of All Time

Though I do love the look of an eye-catching bold lipstick hue, I have always been partial to lipgloss for its ease of application and the way it feels on my lips. It’s simply more hydrating and comfortable on my prone-to-chapping pout. And, over the years I’ve tried hundreds — serious boat loads — of glosses. It’s one of the joys of being a beauty editor. Though I can’t say every experience was a positive one.

But, there are only a few lipglosses that I’ve ever replenished and those are the ones I’m sharing with you today. These are the wands and tubes I found to be the most gorgeous (obviously), but beyond that, the ones that feel the best on and are so versatile that I can slick them on with almost any other makeup — or any outfit — I might be wearing. The best part? All four of these lipgloss shades are flattering on almost any skin tone — from pasty types like mine to rich cocoa tones. I hope you try them and like them as much as I do.

Chanel Glossimer in Spark, $29.50 — a shimmering, sheer pinky-red hue that instantly brightens up your look without being over-the-top. It has just enough stick to last longer than some glosses, but not so much that you’ll catch every gnat that flies by. And, the sponge-tip applicator makes it easy to apply precisely without a mirror.

Estee Lauder High Gloss in Blush, $16 — this blushy-nude hue can be worn alone or on top of another lip color to add a pop of shine or moisture. I talked both my mom and sister into buying it and they loved it, too. Not sticky at all (though it doesn’t last quite as long as a result) and perfectly shiny (without being shimmery). It should be a makeup bag staple for all.

Make Up For Ever Lab Shine Lip Gloss Star Collection in S24, $18 — though I’m not a big fan of the brush applicator — it tends to get smooshed and bent out of shape — it’s worth putting up with because the formula is divine. Again, not sticky at all — this makes your lips feel hydrated and look juicy and kissable. The sheer, peachy-coral hue adds just a touch of color to your face without making a statement. Love.

L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Le Gloss in Blushing Berry, $7.95 — the newest addition to my list, this tube-o-gloss has a somewhat similar shade to the Chanel Glossimer mentioned above. It’s just a touch more raspberry than strawberry. It’s shimmery, stick-free and at this price, a definite keeper.

Now that I’ve shared my faves, tell me which product is your favorite lipgloss of all time.

How to Get Matte Red Lips That Really Last

When backstage at the Monique Lhuillier show during New York Fashion Week, I learned a pretty snazzy trick that’ll help make all of your bold lipsticks — red included — last longer and look perfectly matte. The secret is blush, yes, blush.

Makeup artist Val Garland created a gorgeous look (a la an “early ’90s Helmut Lang girl”) that was defined by a fabulous red lip. And, in order to get the perfect shade of red you see above, she mixed three products. First she applied a blue-based red lip liner (she used MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry, $14) then she topped the liner with a yellow-based red lipstick (she used MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger, $14.50). The combo together adds depth to your pout to make it look fuller. And finally, the most important and interesting part — she set the lipstick with blush. Yes, the powdery stuff you normally dust on your cheeks. She dabbed a reddish orange blush over the lipstick to make it appear super matte and to set the color for long-lasting wear. She used MAC Pro Satin Blush in Devil, $15.50 (available at Pro stores only).

I’ve set mine with loose powder before, but haven’t ever tried blush. Have you? I’m definitely attempting it the next time I go for red.

How to Get Julianne Moore’s Stunning Bold Lip Look

When New York City-based makeup artist Fabiola Arancibia posted a photo on Facebook of Julianne Moore at a fall fashion week kickoff event, I immediately had to message her to get the scoop on how she created the gorgeous makeup look. Here’s how she did it:

First, she admitted that she was “fortunate to have worked with such a gorgeous face” before spilling the details on the look …

Step 1: She prepped Moore’s skin with Kiehl’s Acai Damage-Protecting Toning Mist, $26 and the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, $44, which she says gives extra hydration and looks amazing under foundation — especially if your skin is a little dry.

Step 2: She applied Cle de Peau Cream Foundation, $120 in the T-zone area and on Moore’s cheeks. She blended it using a moist Beauty Blender, $19.95, for light coverage.

Step 3: To conceal Moore’s undereye area she used two shades of Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat, $40.

Step 4: Using a matte peachy contour cream, she enhanced Moore’s cheekbones.

Step 5: The eyes were enhanced with black liquid liner on top lids, a touch of pencil liner on the bottom and black mascara.

Step 6: Arancibia finished the look by applying a bordeaux lip color (she used Nars Semi Matte Lipstick in Scarlet Empress, $24), which perfectly complemented her striking navy Roberto Cavalli dress.

What do you think of this look? Would you try it?

Copy Michelle Williams’ Fresh Faced Makeup Look from the SAG Awards

Not sure about you, but I thought Michelle Williams looked stunning at Sunday night’s SAG awards. And, though I don’t have the cojones to chop my hair off to sport an adorable pixie cut like Ms. Williams’, her fresh faced makeup look is one that I will wear over and over again. Perfect for a night out, but wearable enough for a daytime event like a wedding or baby shower. Here’s how to recreate the look:

Step 1: Even out your skin tone and hide any imperfections with a glow-enhancing foundation. Try Lancome Teint Miracle, $39.

Step 2: Sweep a bit of peachy bronzed colored blush on your cheekbones. Blend very well until the color just fades into the rest of your skin. Try Maybelline New York Dream Bouncy Blush in Peach Satin or Coffee Cake, $7.99.

Step 3: Blend a champagne-colored eyeshadow base on your eyelids — from lashlines to creases. Try Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Sin, $19.

Step 4: Blend a bit of taupey/brown eyeshadow along your creases to subtly define your eyes.

Step 5: Line top lids with black liquid or gel eyeliner (try Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in Matte Black, $23). Make the line a bit thicker as you reach your outer corners. Not skilled at applying liquid or gel? Follow these expert eyeliner tips for help.

Step 6: Line your bottom lashlines with a metallic silver eye pencil. Try MAC Glitter and Ice Technakohl Liner in Silver Skates, $16 (limited edition).

Step 7: Finish the eyes by applying black mascara on top and bottom lashes.

Step 8: Apply a soft coral lipstick like Lancome Rouge In Love Lipstick in Corail In Love, $25 and top with a shimmery peach-colored gloss (try Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish in Amber, $18 ).

Which A-lister topped your “best” list from the SAG awards?
