3 Beauty Products That’ll Perk Up Your Morning

If you want to put a little spring in your step before your morning Starbucks bold brew, stash these minty-fresh beauty products in your bathroom. They all offer up a cooling/tingling sensation that is totally invigorating, super refreshing and eye opening. I can’t make it through some mornings without them.

Pureology Hydrate Conditioner, $29.99

Not only is this a color-protecting, vegan and sulfate-free conditioner, but it also makes your entire scalp tingle if you let it sit on your strands for a couple of minutes. It’s like a mini spa treatment for your head. After using it, your hair will be thoroughly moisturized and easy to comb. I also dig the new packaging, which helps you squeeze every last drop out of the bottle.

Bliss Mammoth Minty Scrub Soap, $18

Yes, an $18 soap, but this isn’t any ordinary soap. It’s a gigantic bar o’ soap that will last for a long, long time. Just keep your toes out of the way if you’re prone to dropping the soap in the shower — ouch! The scent is fresh and minty and your body will be left with a tingly feeling that will practically melt stress away. It’s also infused with jojoba beads to exfoliate skin as you cleanse.

Mama Mio Lucky Legs Cooling Serum, $19.50

If you have sore feet or calves after a night of dancing or standing in stilettos, this should be your post-shower go-to. Slather on the light lotion-y serum and your aches will get instant relief. Even better, the product leaves behind a very subtle sparkle that will help your legs look their best. It’s packed with hard-working ingredients like essential plant oils, lavandin (anti-inflammatory and circulation-boosting), cypress (vasoconstricting), cistus ladaniferus (fatigue diminishing), menthol, aloe vera and more. Plus, it excludes parabens, petroleum, phthalates, colourants and synthetic fragrances.

One warning: After using these products you may become addicted to the tingle. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Beauty Problem Solver of the Week: Voce Haircare Leave In Detangler

The Product: Voce Haircare Leave In Detangler, $26

Why: This isn’t the first time I’ve written about Voce Haircare. I have previously raved about their Hydrate It Shampoo and Conditioner for their amazing scent and ability to keep my frizzy, dry, color-treated strands feeling soft, looking shiny and smelling fabulous. Well, now I have a third product from the line that I can’t live without. The leave-in conditioning spray. Leave-in conditioners are a must for me. Not only do they help detangle my hair post-shower, but they also add the extra moisture my wavy hair needs to look healthy.

The reason I’ve been reaching for this one in particular is because it’s a spray, which makes it quick and easy to use. And, it’s very lightweight, so hair is never weighed down and it doesn’t feel like your hair has product in it. Finally, it smells amazing — like coconut, but not in an overly fruity, artificial way — and it’s paraben-free. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Now tell me, which beauty product is tickling your fancy this week?

Full disclosure: The company gave me a sample of this product to test. See my complete disclosure policy here.

Easy DIY Fix for Dry Hair

Reader question: “Being a new mama my hair is super dry … suggestions?” — Heather

Answer: Moisture, moisture, moisture. Basically, you’ll want to give your strands a once-a-week treat with a deep conditioning product. Or, because you’re a new mom and might not have time to run out and grab a fancy deep conditioner, you can use this simple DIY recipe courtesy of Janice Cox author of Natural Beauty for All Seasons (and a few other fabulous DIY beauty books).

Hot Oil Treatment for Winter Hair

This what she calls it in her book, which makes this not only great for new moms, but for all of us who are feeling crunchy ends now that the weather is getting cooler.

What you need:

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 cup boiling distilled water

blender

How to whip it up:

Pour the oil in the blender. Slowly add the boiling water. Blend on high until the oil has broken up into teeny droplets. Massage the mixture into your hair from roots to ends. Pop on a shower cap and wrap your head in a towel. Let the oil sit on your hair for about 20 minutes. Shampoo and condition as usual.

Why it’ll work:

“Olive oil increases your hair’s strength and flexibility. This is especially important if you use heated styling tools …”  notes Cox in her book.

Beauty Problem Solvers of the Week #17

The products: Vocé Haircare Hydrate It Shampoo, $23 and Vocé Haircare Hydrate It Conditioner, $24.

Why: Last week I showed off my newish copper-colored hair color. And, as you may know, red hues are the hardest to hang on to because red pigment molecules are smaller than other shades making them harder for your hair to hold on to. With each wash, color gets less and less vibrant. Because of this fact, I wanted to make sure that I starting using a sulfate- and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner. Both ingredients — well sulfates mostly — cause hair colors to fade even faster.

That’s when I started using these Vocé products. The new brand was actually created by Kaz Amor of the Warren Tricomi LA salon, the talented colorist who did my hair color transformation. Without even seeing or feeling the results of the shampoo and conditioner, I was already enamored with them. They have the most amazing coconut-y sweet (though naturally and subtly sweet) smell. Upon my first use, I had a Calgon-take-me-away kinda of moment. The actual combination of scents is coconut, peach and white jasmine leaves. Yum.

Now that I’ve been using the moisture-infused formulas for a few weeks, I can tell that my hair feels hydrated and my color hasn’t faded nearly as quickly as I thought it would. I also do avoid washing my hair too often (twice a week is my standard) and I rinse my hair with warm, not super hot, water which also helps color last.

So tell me, which shampoo and conditioner are you using right now? Any worth gushing over?
