Twisted Tuesday: Side French Braid with a Twist

Side French Braid With a Twist

side braid with a twist a photo (11)

Today’s braided hairstyle was inspired by a waitress at Babica Hen Cafe in Lake Oswego, Ore. — their waffles are to die for, by the way. Anyway, I thought the hairstyle was super cute and totally practical for a day of work — whether you work in a restaurant or an office. It’s a more modern way to sport a French braid. It’s a lot less polygamy compound wife-looking than your standard, straight-down-the-middle braid. Here’s how I did it:

Step 1: Create a side part.

Step 2: Twist the front (bang) section of your hair — on the same side of your part — toward the back of your head. Secure with a bobby pin.

Step 3: Start regular French braiding the opposite side of your head. You’ll want to keep the braid closer to your hairline than the back of your head. Continuing braiding your hair until all of your remaining hanging hair is added.

Step 4: Regular braid your hair to the ends and secure with a tiny clear elastic.

Beauty Mood Booster of the Week: Braids

If you’ve been following my posts, you probably noticed that I have a thing for braids. This isn’t something new. I’ve been braiding my hair since my Barbie-obsessed kiddo days. Braids for me are not only a great solution for a slew of things including dirty hair days, bangs you’re trying to grow out and adding some sort of style to your hair in seconds, but they are also whimsical, fun and often garner a ton of compliments. Bottom line, they are a great way to boost your mood and maybe even make you feel like a kid again.

Well, last night I was lucky enough to be at the kick off of Warren Tricomi Los Angeles’ braiding services menu where they were demoing some gorgeous braids on the guests. You can walk into the salon and have them done for $30. I heard whispers that they may share how-tos with the rest of the world too, so I’ll keep you non-Angelenos posted on that. So today, I have to share the photos of the braids — to hopefully inspire you to try one. It might just be that spirit-lifting fix you’ve been looking for.

Beauty Problem Solver of the Week #4

Shaveworks The Cool Fix, $11 (for 2 oz)

Why: Earlier this week, in prep for my quick weekend trip to Catalina Island with the fam, I got a bikini wax — an obviously essential service to have before exposing a bikini-clad body.

But here’s the deal: Every time I get a wax, I always have some post-waxing irritation and days later I end up with ingrown hairs. This is not uncommon for those who wax, but it’s an annoying series of events that must be dealt with, which is why I reached for this nifty blue gel. Continue reading

Buying Beauty Products on Amazon.com — A Do or Don’t?

Q:
“Do you think it’s safe to buy beauty products from a website such as Amazon?” asks reader Mrs. O.

A: In short, yes, but in my opinion, you should definitely recognize the seller, which is always listed. If Amazon.com is the seller, I absolutely think it’s safe to buy products from them. They have a name to uphold and are a trusted site in general to buy from. That being said, if the seller is SallySellsBeautyProducts (I’m making this name up, obviously), I would be more hesitant to buy anti-aging creams, mascara, foundation, etc. from them — even if the products are new. I would never buy used beauty products and don’t recommend it. If you’re unsure about whether the seller can be trusted or not, read the reviews about the seller and check out the ratings. If they don’t have any, I’d steer clear. If they have many positive reviews, you can be a little less wary about making a purchase. Continue reading
